The legendary avant-garde choreographer Merce Cunningham died yesterday at the age of 90.
Cunningham was the life-partner and a main collaborator of the equally legendary (and, equally avant-garde) composer John Cage. He also worked with Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and others.
Cunningham also worked with up-to-the-moment acts like Radiohead and Sigur Ros (each of whom have since performed for His Holiness the Dalai Lama).
Cage (who died in 1992) had stated that Zen Buddhism had led him to use the element of chance in his work, and this was something that Cunningham took to heart, too. The results will remain unforgettable to fans of dance everywhere.
