Alfred Bloom, a pioneer of English-language Jodo Shinshu Buddhist studies, died on August 25 at the age of 91. He was with family. Zen teacher and Unitarian Unversalist minister James Ishmael Ford wrote a remembrance of Bloom on his blog. Ford quotes Shin priest Jeff Wilson, who once wrote that Bloom was “widely regarded as one of the most important American figures of the past five decades in the Jodo Shin school of Buddhism.”
According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, there will be a service for Bloom on Saturday, September 2.
