The 2014 National Medal of Arts has been awarded to Buddhist artist Meredith Monk, “for her contributions as a composer, singer, and performer.” The medal is awarded to “individuals or groups who, in the President’s judgment, are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States.”
Monk has appeared in the Shambhala Sun and Buddhadharma multiple times. Read her article, “The Art of Being Present,” on how her art and dharma practice intertwine.
